5 Days
NORTH & EAST ADVENTURE
(Amy Noles McElderry)

day 1 : july 18
west of iceland

Hvítserkur, a 15-meter tall monolith or sea-stack, an eroded volcanic dyke. It looks like an animal of some sort, an elephant or a rhino; or even a dinosaur drinking.

People lived in Glaumbær turf house until 1947. A farm has stood on this site since the settlement of Iceland in the year 874 - give or take a few years. The present farmhouse consists of 13 buildings and the "newest" addition to the turf house was built in 1876-1879. The oldest parts of the turf house date back to the mid 18th century.

Kolugljúfur is amazing, it took my breath away immediately as I walked to the bridge crossing the river. The canyon is 40-50 metres deep and a little over 1 km long.

day 2 : july 19
north of iceland

Goðafoss waterfall is located in the river Skjálfandafljót in north Iceland, the fourth-largest river in Iceland. It is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the country, falling from a height of 12 meters (39 feet) over a width of 30 meters (98 feet).

Námafjall, also known as Hverir, you will see many smoking fumaroles and boiling mud pots, surrounded by sulphur crystals of many different colours. This sulphur gives the area an overwhelming smell of egg.

day 3 : july 20
north of iceland

  • The Arctic Henge

  • Dettifoss (most powerful waterfall in Europe)

  • Ásbyrgi Canyon

  • Lake Mývatn

  • Dimmuborgir Lava Field

  • Accommodations : Mývatn
    Mývatn - Berjaya Iceland Hotels
    Fosshotel Mývatn
    Laxá Hótel
    Vogafjós Farm Resort
    Sel-Hotel Myvatn

The Arctic Henge is a monument to Asatru, the beliefs of the Old Norse. It is located in the northernmost settlement of mainland Iceland.
Dettifoss is fed by the powerful glacier river Jökulsá á Fjöllum which flows from the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. The thunderous fall has an average water flow of 193 meters cubed per second (6,186 cubic feet). It is 100 meters (330 feet) wide and plummets 45 meters (150 feet) down into Jökulsárgljúfur canyon.

Dimmuborgir, or the Black Fortress, is a dramatic expanse of lava in the Lake Mývatn area. Steeped with folklore, it is one of the most popular destinations for travellers to north Iceland.

day 4 : july 21
east of iceland

This part of the East is my favourite. We will be exploring Stuðlagil Canyon, this is my favourite spot of the hall Iceland. Huge basalts columns that was newly discovered, and glacier blue green colour water. This is an amazing place for hiking.

day 5 : july 22
